Extension hosts Watermelon Festival contests

The Franklin County Extension Office is once again sponsoring a few contests to go along with this weekend’s Franklin County Watermelon Festival.

There will be a Cutest Baby/Child Photo Contest, Iced Tea Contest, Coloring Contest and Trivia Contest.

For the Cutest Baby/Child Photo Contest, contestants must enter a photo sized between 5×7 and 11×14 that is mounted on a poster or foam board. The child’s face must be clearly shown and be the main focus of the photo. There will be boy and girl categories as follows: baby (0-12 months), toddler (1-3) and preschool (4-5). Name, address, phone number, category and age of the contestant should be printed on the back of the board.

First place will receive $25, second place will receive $20 and third place will receive $15.

Iced Tea Contest participants must be 18 years or older. Tea must be submitted in a half gallon plastic container, and contestants must attach their recipe, phone number, name, address and category – sweetened, flavored or sugar substitute.

First place receives $30, second place receives $25 and third place receives $20.

Coloring Contest sheets can be picked up at the Franklin County Courthouse or the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. Age categories are kindergarten through first grade or second and third grade.

First place will receive $12. Second place will receive $10. Third place will receive $8.

To hear the Trivia Contest questions, participants must listen to radio station WGOL. Trivia participants must be 18 or older.

“I like a good contest,” said Franklin County Extension Director Katernia Cole-Coffey. “You get a chance to see the creative side of the people in the community and how they see the community.”

Everything for the contests must be turned in by Aug. 16 at the Extension office in the courthouse. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Results will be displayed on the first floor of the courthouse Aug. 17-23.
