Hi folks,
This is July 4, a holiday that is celebrated across our country. Many refer to this day as “Independence Day.”
The only two signers of the Declaration of Independence who would later become presidents of the United Sates died on the same day, July 4, 1826, which was the 50th anniversary of the Declaration. A strange happening! Would you agree?
A lot of strange things happen every day in our country. I have always been fascinated with these happenings.
The year 2018 is half over, and it seems that time is really passing quickly, but it’s not. Maybe we are all so busy that we fail to enjoy each day as we should. The Fourth of July brings a lot of excitement. I can hear fireworks as I write this.
I see a lot of watermelons in the stores. Ice cream freezers are on display, and we all look forward to a big cookout on this day.
In Russellville a big event will be taking place at Sloss Lake. Entertainment will begin early and continue throughout the day. A big fireworks show will be held later at night. The “Ol Pump Pond” will come alive as fireworks brighten the sky.
I am sure many people are looking forward to this big event. I remember well how my friend Willard Wilson would make a great effort for the flags to be displayed on the pond on Highway 24.
Mr. Allen O’Reilly during this time made a genuine effort to display flags all over the city.
If you have a flag, please put it on display. It’s just adds so much to the spirit of Independence Day.
So many of our old friends have left us since last year, but we have had a lot of new arrivals as well. This is the way that life works; we must accept it and be happy that we can be here to enjoy each and every day.
This holiday is a lot of fun, and pleasure will be had, but there will be a lot of sorrow as well. Remember what Robert Browning had to say about it. “I walked a mile with Pleasure; She chatted all the way; But left me none the wiser; For all she had to say. I walked a mile with Sorrow; And ne-er a word said she; But oh! The things I learned from her, When Sorrow walked with me.
