The Belgreen Lady Bulldogs will make their first-ever appearance in the softball state tournament after a 15-0 blowout of the Waterloo Cougars last week.
Belgreen, winner of the 1A North Regional, will play the North-Central runner-up South Lamar Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. in Montgomery at Lagoon Park.
“This will be our first time to go to the state tournament,” said Belgreen coach Chris Scott. “These girls have been playing together for a long time, and it is a very special moment for them.”
Belgreen just needed three innings to put Waterloo away.
The Bulldogs scored two runs in the first inning and pulled away by extending their lead to 8-0 in the second inning. The Bulldogs added seven insurance runs in the third to solidify the win.
Sidney Borden led Belgreen with three hits, including two doubles and three runs batted in, and scored three runs.
Emma Dempsey went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and scored three runs. Camie Terrell added a two-run triple, and Cortney Williams tacked on a two-run double.
Emma Dempsey was the winning pitcher, allowing just four hits in the game and striking out five batters.
Belgreen beat Decatur Heritage 12-11 Thursday and Covenant Christian 7-3 earlier in the day Friday to advance to the regional finals to play Waterloo.
