Common faces attempted murder indictment

John James Common, 34, has been indicted by a Franklin County Grand Jury for three charges related to his arrest in 2017, according to district attorney Joey Rushing.

Common was indicted for attempting to commit murder, discharging a firearm into an occupied building and kidnapping first degree.

“We were able to indict him here on these charges, and he’ll have to be brought back from federal prison to face those charges,” Rushing said.

Common was arrested in February 2017 and charged with attempted murder, discharging a weapon into an occupied building, trafficking cocaine, synthetic marijuana hydrocodone, possession of marijuana first degree and possession of drug paraphernalia first degree.

According to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office, Common allegedly shot into a house on McCarley Road in Phil Campbell, where two people were present inside the home. Authorities reported Common was identified from the security footage and later arrested and charged during a traffic stop on Filmore Street in Russellville.

Prior to the arrest in February, Common was on parole after serving three years in prison out of a 20-year sentence for a previous conviction. In April 2017, Common’s probation was revoked, and he was returned to jail.
