UPDATED: RCS, FCS, NW-SCC cancel school for Wednesday

With winter weather rolling in, local school districts took necessary precautions and canceled classes for Tuesday – and that closure will continue another day. Franklin County Schools and Russellville City Schools, along with Northwest-Shoals Community College, have now announced schools will be closed again Jan. 17.

Ice and snow descended on Franklin County Tuesday morning. With this threat in mind, administrators announced Monday afternoon the cancelation of Tuesday classes.

Local sporting events and other activities were also canceled or rescheduled.

Tuesday, noting the “snow accumulations today, dangerously low temperatures in the morning, current road conditions and the unlikely chance road conditions will improve,” as RCS put it in the district’s Twitter announcement, each district extended the snow day to include Wednesday, as well.

The extra day out of school could also be beneficial to student and teacher health.

“With the flu season being at its peak, this closure will give our students and faculty extra time to recover from any recent illness,” Russellville City Schools stated in a Twitter announcement about the Tuesday closure. “Please take this time to disinfect jackets, backpacks, school supplies and any other items that have been exposed to germs that your child will be bringing back to school. We want to take all the precautions we can to ensure our students are healthy and well when we return to school.”

Northwest-Shoals Community College will also close Jan. 17 because of the hazardous icy road conditions, school officials announced late Tuesday afternoon.
