Tharptown girls get tournament win

The Tharptown girls basketball teams split two games in the Berry Christmas Tournament last week. Tharptown beat the host team Berry but fell to Holy Spirit.
The Tharptown boys dropped two games in the annual TimesDaily Classic.
Girls
Tharptown 46, Berry 33
Brooke Daily and Shaylee Wieting combined for 27 points to lead the Tharptown Wildcats past Berry 46-33.
Berry held an early first-quarter advantage over Tharptown, 9-8. Tharptown took the lead in the second quarter, outscoring Berry 10-7 to take gain an 18-16 halftime advantage. The Lady Wildcats extended their lead to 33-23 at the end of the third quarter.
Daily and Wieting scored 14 and 13 points respectively. Adrianna Borden and Ameliah Dawson scored six points each. Aly Vandiver had four points, and Catie Dawson chipped in three points.
Holy Spirit 60, Tharptown 49
Daily scored 19 points – 15 at the free throw line – and pulled down 15 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to overcome 26 turnovers. The Tharptown Wildcats lost to Holy Spirit 60-49.
Holy Spirit led 16-12 at the end of the first quarter and 34-28 at halftime. Holy Spirit extended the lead to 49-37 at the end of the third quarter.
Wieting followed Daily with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Dawson scored seven points, Linda Bahena five points, Aly Vandiver four points and Anslee Bottoms and Adrianna Borden two points each.
Boys
Mars Hill 62, Tharptown 43
The Tharptown Wildcats led Mars Hill early in the game, but big second and third quarters helped the Panthers pull away with a 62-43 win in the first round of the TimesDaily Classic.
Tharptown led Mars Hill 12-9 at the end of the first quarter. Mars Hill outscored Tharptown 21-9 in the second quarter to take a 30-21 first half lead. The Panthers came out of the locker room hot, outscoring Tharptown 22-8 to take a 52-27 lead into the final quarter.
Carson Petree led Tharptown with 10 points. Levi McCormack followed with eight points. Cole Daniel and Winston Nolen scored six points each. Miseal Saldana finished with five points. Aaron Creasy and Edward Lopez had four points each. Skyler Fields contributed two points.
Sheffield 65, Tharptown 42
The Tharptown Wildcats played the Sheffield Bulldogs tough through three quarters, but Sheffield pulled away in the fourth quarter to beat Tharptown 65-42 in the second round of the TimesDaily Classic.
Tharptown had no answer for Sheffield on the boards, as the Bulldogs outrebounded the Wildcats 38-22.
Sheffield led Tharptown by just a point at the end of the first quarter, 14-13. Sheffield extended their lead to 29-26 in the second. The Bulldogs moved a little farther away in the third quarter, leading Tharptown 44-37 going into the final period. Sheffield snuffed out any comeback attempt by Tharptown in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 21-5.
Daniel led Tharptown with 12 points and six rebounds. Lopez followed with seven points, McCormack with six points and Saldana with five points. Nolen, Petree and Creasy scored four points each.
Tharptown Holiday Tournament
Tharptown High School will host a holiday tournament beginning Dec. 27 through Dec. 29.
The varsity girls division will be a full tournament schedule with a consolation bracket. The varsity boys division will be a one-day only round-robin format.
Belgreen and Oakman will tip off the tournament at 1 p.m. Wednesday. Mars Hill will play Lynn at 2:30 p.m. Rogers will play Carbon Hill at 4 p.m. Tharptown will play Brilliant at 5:30 p.m.
The second day of the tournament will begin at 1 p.m. Thursday with consolation games.
The final day of the tournament will begin at 10 a.m. with the finals of the girls division at 7 p.m.
The boys division will be a one-day round-robin format Dec. 29 featuring Tharptown, Lynn and Elkmont.
Tharptown will play Elkmont at 11:30 a.m.; Elkmont will play Lynn at 2:30 p.m.; and Tharptown will play Lynn at 5:30 p.m.
