Belgreen girls roll to big win over Vina, boys improve to 5-0

Girls
The Belgreen Lady Bulldogs jumped on the Vina Lady Red Devils early and held on for a big area win, 81-60.
Belgreen raced out to a quick 15-3 first quarter lead over the Red Devils. Belgreen outscored Vina in the second quarter 23-16 to take a 38-19 halftime lead. The Bulldogs extended their lead to 53-31 at the end of the third quarter.
“I was proud of our girls’ defensive effort in the first half,” said Belgreen coach Chad Green. “I thought we rebounded well most of the game.”
Both teams hit nine three-pointers in the game. Belgreen’s aggressive play led to shooting 40 free throws in the game but only making 20.
“We have got to get better from the free-throw line if we are going to be able to achieve our goals for the year,” added Green.
Belgreen had four players in double figures. Katie Dempsey led the way with 16 points. Gabbie Moore and Emma Dempsey followed with 15 points each. Jasmine Martin added 12 points. Gracie Dempsey finished with seven points, Autumn Bragwell with six points, Emma Willingham with five points, Megan Smith with three points and Ansley Tate with two points.
Abby Hester led Vina with 21 points. She was followed by Emma Humphres with 16 points and Rayleigh Guinn with 12 points. Kaley Vandiver finished with seven points. Sara Scott and Kaitlyn King contributed two points each.
Phillips 83, Belgreen 55
A strong second quarter was all the Phillips Bears needed to cruise to an 83-55 win over the Belgreen Bulldogs.
Belgreen led Phillips 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, but the Bears outscored the Bulldogs 29-5 in the second quarter to take a 38-16 halftime lead. Phillips extended the lead to 57-33 at the end of the third quarter.
Moore led Belgreen with 19 points. Tate and Emma Dempsey finished with 10 points each. Martin added six points, Katie Dempsey four points and Willingham two points. Bragwell and Smith finished with a point each.
Boys
The Belgreen Bulldogs improved to 5-0 last week with two easy wins over Vina and Phillips. The Bulldogs beat Vina 90-43 and Phillips 90-56.
Belgreen 90, Vina 43
Belgreen jumped out to a 24-12 first quarter lead over the Red Devils and led 49-29 at halftime, cruising to the win.
Brant Bragwell led Belgreen with 23 points. Mason Bragwell followed with 17 points and Jacob Mayberry with 12 points. Gaven Taylor and Seth Taylor scored 11 points each. Payton Scott finished with eight points, Ashlee Britton with five points, Eli Hiser with two points and Caleb Pinkard with one point.
Jackson Landers led Vina with 18 points, followed by Zarek Barnett with 13 points. Blake Hardin and Elijah Whitfield had three points. Braden Moomaw, Tanner McAlister and Timothy Newell contributed two points each.
Belgreen 90, Phillips 56
The Belgreen Bulldogs had no problem outpacing area foe Phillips last week, winning 90-56. The Bulldogs scored 27 points in the second quarter and 28 points in the third quarter en route to the win.
Mayberry led Belgreen with 16 points. Brant Bragwell and Mason Bragwell scored 14 points each. Scott, Jake Taylor and Britton added nine points each. Seth Taylor finished with eight points and Pinkard with seven points. Gaven Taylor and Hiser finished with two points each.
