RFD urges safety tips for Thanksgiving

These safety tips from the National Fire Protection Association, shared by Russellville Fire Department, are designed to make Thanksgiving a time of safe family togetherness.

Many safety concerns involve children having access to items that could pose a hazard. The RFD urges families to keep the following safety measures in mind:

  • Keep children at least three feet away from the stove.
  • Keep children away from hot foods and liquids.
  • Keep the floor clear.
  • Keep knives out of the reach of children.
  • Don’t leave electric cords dangling off the counter.
  • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children.
  • Never leave children alone in a room with a lit candle.

Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for home fires involving cooking equipment. To stay safe in the kitchen over the holidays:

  • Remain in the kitchen when cooking on the stovetop.
  • Stay close by when cooking a turkey.
  • Cook with caution. Don’t use the stove or oven if you are sleepy or have consumed alcohol.
  • Keep flammable items away from the stovetop.
  • If there is a small grease fire while cooking, leave the oven door closed and turn off the heat if that is the source. If it is on the stovetop, smother the flames by sliding a lid over the flames and turning off the eye. If there is any doubt about being able to fight the fire, just get out and call 911.

The RFD will share additional seasonal safety tips in the coming weeks.
