County teams report wins

Vina 58, Tharptown 50

The Vina Red Devils improved their record to 12-1 with a 58-50 win over the Tharptown Wildcats last week. Abby Hester went 15-23 from the free throw line to help stave off a 29-point fourth quarter comeback by the Wildcats.

Vina doubled up Tharptown in the first quarter 18-6. The Red Devils increased their lead to 31-14 and to 41-21 by the end of the third quarter. Tharptown got a spark from two ninth graders: Brooke Daily scored 13 of her 16 points and Aly Vandiver scored eight of her 12 points in the fourth quarter as they outscored the Red Devils 29-17.

Vina was led by Hester, who scored 22 points. She was followed by Kaitlyn King, who netted 11 points. Gracie Raper (8), Sarah Johnson (7), Emma Humphres (5), Rayleigh Guinn (2) and Mary Clingan (1) also scored for Vina.

Daily and Vandiver finished with 16 points and 12 points respectively. Ameliah Dawson finished with seven points, Klaudia Harris and Catie Dawson had seven points each, and Jessica Wilson finished with three points.

Phil Campbell 63, Sulligent 34

The Phil Campbell Bobcats had no problem with area rival Sulligent last Friday night, winning 63-34.

The Bobcats led 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 35-23 at halftime. Phil Campbell led 50-28 at the end of the third quarter, cruising to the win.

Abby Davis led the Bobcats with 24 points. She was followed by Darby Elliott with 13 points and Chloe Roberson with ten points. Carley Nix had seven points, Dakota Elliott had six points, Bethany Harris had two points, and Anna Benford had one point.

Red Bay 51, Lamar County 46

Darby Madden drained 30 points to power the Red Bay Tigers past Lamar County 51-46 in the area matchup.

Red Bay jumped out to a 14-9 first quarter lead and extended that lead to 26-19 by halftime. Lamar County made some halftime adjustments and played the Tigers even in the third quarter 11-11, making the score 37-30 going into the fourth quarter. Lamar County outscored Red Bay 16-14 in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers were able to hold on for the area win.

Allie Kennedy followed Madden with nine points. Reagan Kuykendall had five points, Carlie Lindley had four points, and Morgan Pierce finished with three points.

Belgreen 44, Phillips 42

A late turnover propelled the Belgreen Bulldogs to a big area win over the Phillips Bears 44-42.

Belgreen led Phillips 9-7 at the end of the first quarter. The Bears roared back in the second quarter, outscoring the Bulldogs 13-8 to take a 20-17 lead into the locker room at halftime. Belgreen narrowed the gap in the third quarter to 32-31. Belgreen outscored Phillips 13-10 in the fourth quarter to nab the win.

Gabbie Moore and Emma Dempsey had ten points each. Jasmine Martin had eight points, Cami Terrell had seven points, Katie Dempsey finished with four points, Shellie Barber with three points and Brianna Wood with two points.

Vina 53, Cherokee 43

Abby Hester dropped 26 points and nabbed ten assists in Vina’s 53-43 win over the Cherokee Indians last week.

Vina and Cherokee played to an 8-8 tie in the first quarter before the Red Devils’ defense shut down the Indians 10-2 in the second quarter. Vina outscored Cherokee 19-14 in the third quarter to take a 37-24 lead. Cherokee tried to make a run in the fourth quarter but could only get within ten points as Vina took the win.

Kaitlyn King followed Hester with ten points. Gracie Raper had eight points, Emma Humphres had five points and Sarah Johnson finished with four points.

Phil Campbell 56, Hamilton 35

The Phil Campbell Bobcats had no problem with the Hamilton Aggies, easily winning 56-35.

Phil Campbell led 18-7 at the end of the first quarter and extended their lead to 35-18 at halftime. Hamilton would close the gap a little in the third quarter by outscoring Phil Campbell 11-5 to make the score 40-29 going into the fourth quarter. Phil Campbell regained the advantage in the fourth quarter, outscoring Hamilton 16-6 en route to the win.

Abby Davis led Phil Campbell with 22 points and ten rebounds. Darby and Dakota Elliott scored 15 and 13 points respectively. Chole Roberson, Bethany Harris and Carley Nix scored two points each.

Belgreen 37, Smithville (Miss.) 29

The Belgreen Bulldogs upended Smithville, Miss., last week, 37-29.

Belgreen led 19-8 at halftime. Smithville came back with a 7-2 third quarter advantage to cut Belgreen’s lead to 21-15. Belgreen outscored Smithville 16-14 in the fourth quarter to take the win.

Jasmine Martin led Belgreen with 12 points. Emma Dempsey finished with nine points, Katie Dempsey had seven points, Emma Willingham had three points, and Cami Terrell and Brianna Wood had two points each.

Hackleburg 31, Tharptown 28

A one-point third quarter doomed the Tharptown Wildcats from picking an area win last week, losing to Hackleburg 31-38.

Hackleburg held just a 9-8 lead at the end of the first quarter. Tharptown outscored Hackleburg 10-8 in the second quarter to take an 18-17 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Hackleburg outscored Tharptown just 8-1 in the third quarter, but it was enough to build an insurmountable lead for the Panthers. Tharptown outscored Hackleburg 9-6 in the fourth quarter.

Jessica Wilson scored half the Wildcats points, dropping 16. Linda Bahena and Ameliah Dawson scored three points each. Klaudia Harris and Hannah Campbell scored two points each.

Lexington 70, Phil Campbell 24

The Lexington Golden Bears overwhelmed the Phil Campbell Bobcats with their relentless pressure and three-point shooting prowess to take a 70-24 win. Lexington hit ten three-pointers in the game.

The Golden Bears led Phil Campbell 25-6 at the end of the first quarter and 44-17 at halftime and cruised to the win.

Abby Davis led Phil Campbell with seven points, Carley Nix had six points, and Chloe Roberson had four points. Maddie Riddle, Darby Elliott, Dakota Elliott, and Megan Bullock all had two points each.

New Site (Miss.) 37, Red Bay 36

New Site enjoyed a three-point advantage heading into the fourth quarter and decided to use a technique Red Bay is know for: the stall. New Site held the ball for six and half minutes of the fourth quarter, allowing Red Bay only a 2-0 advantage. New Site escaped with the one-point win, 37-36.

Red Bay led 17-11 at the end of the first quarter and 28-23 at halftime. New Site took the lead in the third quarter by outscoring Red Bay 14-6 to take the 37-34 lead.

Darby Madden led Red Bay with 18 points. Allie Kennedy finished the game with seven points, Carlee Humphres with six points, and Carlie Lindley with five points.
