    County basketball teams week review

    Girls

     

    Belgreen 48, Tharptown 41

    The Belgreen Bulldogs snapped a 14-game losing streak to the Tharptown Wildcats Friday night with a 48-41 win.

    Tharptown led Belgreen 11-9 at the end of the first quarter. The Bulldogs stormed back to take a 22-20 halftime lead. Belgreen extended their lead to 35-29 at the end of the third quarter and hung on for the win.

    Allyson Bragwell led Belgreen with 13 points. She was followed by Jasmine Martin who scored 11 points.  Others scoring for the Bulldogs were Brianna Wood (8), Gabbie Moore (7), Ana Castillo (6), and Johnna Oliver (3).

    Kaitlyn Vandiver and Jessica Wilson led Tharptown with 11 and 10 points respectively. Others scoring for the

    Wildcats were Haley Malone (8), Klaudia Harris (6) and Ameliah Dawson (6).

    Vina 53, Covenant Christian 47

    Vina led Covenant Christian 14-9 after the first quarter and extended their lead to 31-23 at halftime. Covenant would cut into 45 to 38 after three quarters, but the Lady Red Devils would hold on for a 53 to 47 victory.

    Abby Hester had 23 points for Vina, and Emma Humphres added 17 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. Mary Clingan had eight points; Montana Howard chipped in two. Kaitlyn King, Annabelle Upton and Gracie Raper all hit one free throw to round out the scoring for the Red Devils.

    Cherokee 55, Vina 45

    The Vina Lady Devils were trying to avenge an earlier season loss this season to Cherokee. The Lady Indians led 15-12 after one and carried a 30-22 halftime lead over Vina. After three quarters, the lead stayed the same at 42-34. Vina cut the lead to one at the four-minute mark but fell short for a 55-45 loss.

    Kaitlyn King led Vina with 12 points, followed by Emma Humphres with 11 points. Abby Hester had ten points and ten assists for a double-double. Montana Howard added eight more points, and Gracie Raper and Lauren Brewer chipped in two each for the final tally for the Lady Red Devils.

    Waterloo 48, Vina 45

    Vina went ice cold in the second half of their game against Waterloo after carrying a 30-20 lead in at halftime. The Lady Red Devils would cut the lead to one twice on three pointers by Abby Hester and Emma Humphres in the last minute, but Waterloo held on for a 48-45 victory as a desperation shot by Vina fell short as time ran out.

    Abby Hester and Emma Humphres had 14 points each for the Lady Red Devils. Mary Clingan scored six and Montana Howard had five. Gracie Raper and Kaitlyn King chipped in three each for the final tally for Vina.

    Red Bay 64, Phil Campbell 36

    The Red Bay Tigers outscored the Phil Campbell Bobcats in each quarter of their matchup Friday night to take the win 64-36.

    Red Bay led Phil Campbell 36-17 at the half and coasted to the win over the Bobcats.

    Allie Kennedy led Red Bay with 19 points. Hope Cook and Darby Madden followed with 12 points and ten points, respectively. Others scoring for the Tigers were Morgan Pierce (9), Katie Burks (6), Savannah Shaw (4), Brooke Shewbart (2) and Holly Hardin (2).

     

    Chloe Roberson led Phil Campbell with 11 points. Abby Davis, Leah Gunderman and Dakota Elliot had six points each. Elizabeth Benford had three points. Darby Elliot and Anna Benford had two points each for the Bobcats.

    Red Bay 54, Sulligent 16

    The Red Bay Tigers dominated the Sulligent Blue Devils in an area matchup last week. The Tigers jumped out to a 24-5 first quarter lead and coasted to a 54-16 win.

    Darby Madden led Red Bay with 16 points. Allie Kennedy and Morgan Pierce scored ten points each. Holly Harding added nine points. Brooke Shewbart, Hope Cook, Carlie Lindley and Katie Burks contributed two points each. Brooklyn Bolton finished with one point in the win for the Tigers.

    Red Bay 40, Ingomar (Miss.) 36

    The Red Bay Tigers traveled to Oxford, Miss., to take on the top ranked team in 2A in the Magnolia State. The Tigers came away 40-36 winners.

    Red Bay led Ingomar 17-9 at the end of the first quarter. Ingomar cut Red Bay’s lead to 22-17 at halftime, but the Tigers were able to hang on for the win.

    Allie Kennedy led Red Bay with 12 points. Hope Cook followed with 11 points. Darby Madden scored nine points. Holly Hardin and Katie Burks scored three points each. Morgan Pierce finished with two points for the Tigers.

    Vina 49, Covenant Christian 42

    On Tuesday at Vina, the Lady Red Devils led 11-8 over Covenant Christian after one quarter. Emma Humphres would have ten of her 19 points in the second quarter as Vina increased the lead to 28-18 at halftime. The Lady Eagles came storming back in the third quarter to make it 31-29 Vina going into the final period.

    Vina’s Abby Hester would score 12 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter as the Lady Red devils would hold for a 49-42 victory. Montana Howard chipped in five for Vina; Mary Clingan scored four points, and Kaitlyn King hit a three to round out Vina’s scoring.

    Hackleburg 46, Vina 34

    On Friday, Vina hosted the Number 1 team in the Area, Hackleburg. After the first quarter, Hackleburg led 14-10. At halftime Hackleburg carried a 24-15 lead in. In the third quarter, the Lady Panthers led the Lady Red Devils 33-24 after three periods. Hackleburg hit nine free throws in the fourth period to Vina’s none as Hackleburg held on for a 46-34 win.

    Emma Humphres led Vina with 12 points, follow by Abby Hester and Kaitlyn King each with seven points, Gracie Raper had five and Mary Clingan chipped in three for all of Vina scoring.

     

    Boys

     

    Phil Campbell 55, Red Bay 27

    The Phil Campbell Bobcats dominated the Red Bay Tigers in their matchup on Friday. The Bobcats outscored the Tigers 12-3 in the first quarter and 16-8 in the second quarter to take a 28-11 halftime lead. Phil Campbell extended their lead to 46-17 at the end of the third quarter and coasted to the win.

    Noah Williams led Phil Campbell with 15 points. Hayden Copeland and Peyton Thomas followed with 12 points each. Others scoring for the Bobcats were Gage Roberson (5), Jacob Anthony (4), Grant Masterson (4) and Joe Hardy (3).

    Tate Ozbirn led Red Bay with eight points. Others scoring for the Tigers were Gath Weatherford (5), Colon Corum (4), Aeron Moor (3), Chandler Allen (3), Austin Milam (2) and Dylan Pearson (2).

    Tharptown 80, Belgreen 61

    The Tharptown Wildcats raced past the Belgreen Bulldogs in their intra-county matchup Friday night.

    The Wildcats outscored the Bulldogs 19-10 in the first quarter and extended their lead to 40-23 at halftime. Belgreen cut Tharptown’s lead to 54-41 at the end of the third quarter and trimmed it even further in the fourth, but the Wildcats pulled away in the end.

     

    Bailey Motes led Tharptown with 29 points. Max Nolen followed with 16 points. Heath Hatton had 11 points.  Others scoring for Tharptown were Blake Gray (8), Nathan Chaney (6), Matthew Brasuell (4), Mikey Rosson (3) and Braden Key (2).

    Jacob Mayberry led Belgreen with 20 points. He was followed by Mason Bragwell, who had 14 points. Others scoring for the Bulldogs were Brant Bragwell (8), Payton Scott (6), Eli Hiser (4), Seth Taylor (3), Adam Green (2), Jospeh Welch (2) and Drew Boshell (2).
