Red Bay student to attend National Beta Club Convention

Katie Burks will be doing something no one in Red Bay High School Beta Club has ever done this summer. Burks, a rising senior at RBHS, has been invited to compete at the National Beta Club Convention.
The state Beta convention was held in April, and it was at this convention that Burks earned her spot to compete at the National Convention. She will be competing in the spelling competition.
“I am very proud of Katie,” said RBHS Beta Club sponsor Lori Hardin. “For the first time that I am aware of, she is the first student from Red Bay who has ever been invited to compete.”
This opportunity is only given to a select few chapters. Beta chapters from across the nation will be bringing the best and brightest to compete in Nashville. The National Beta Convention will take place June 29-July 1 at the Gaylord Convention Center.
To be eligible for Beta Club, students must maintain certain rigorous requirements. Students must be on advanced diploma for their freshman through senior years and maintain “A” averages in math, science, English and history. Students are also required to perform two hours of community service each year. This year, which marks the 72nd year for RBHS to have a Beta Club, there are 30 members in grades 9-12.
Beta Club will be holding a road block fundraiser in June.
