GFWC Book Lovers Study Club wins district awards

BOOKLOVERS

Book Lovers held its April 9 meeting at the Historic Bennett Hall. Hillary Hall served as hostess with Hayley Fuller and Susie Malone serving as co-hostesses.

This was a special club meeting to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs. To commemorate GFWC Federation Day April 24, a special GFWC cake was served to members and guests Vicki Robinson and Sue Gilliland. In recognition of this historic event, Susie Malone presented an informative institute on the history and the many accomplishments of the federation. Also the history of Book Lovers Club, which was federated in 1928, was covered.

GFWC pins were given to new members Debbie Beason, Nina McNatt, Michelle Sibley, and Audrey Herring.

President Cheri McCain called the business meeting to order. The club minutes and treasurer’s report were approved. Cheri reported on the AFWC District meeting and shared with members several award certificates that Book Lovers received: GFWC Signature Project Domestic Violence Awareness and Prevention; Ronald McDonald House Charities; Arts Community Service; Conservation Community Service; Education Community Service; Home Life Community Service; International Outreach Community Service; Public Issues Community Service; Communication and Public Relations Advancement Area; Leadership Advancement Area; Legislation and Public Policy Advance Area;

Membership Advancement Area; and Fundraising and Development Advancement Area.

She also reported that one of our Russellville High School students, Michaela Fish, won the $500 AFWC District Scholarship. This is the second time in a row that one of our students has received this scholarship.

Book Lovers members approved a donation of $100 to the Seed Distribution Community Action Northwest Alabama, which includes Franklin County. It was reported that about 350 families come by to register each year.

In recognition of Arbor Day, members voted to plant a tree at the City Lake Park.

Members were reminded about the up-coming AFWC Convention that will be held at Guntersville Lake Park. Pop tabs and shoes for Soles4Souls are being collected from members to carry to the convention. Several members turned in pop tabs; a thanks to Rebecca Reeves, who got CB&S to partner with us and collected several drink tabs. A picture was taken at the meeting to promote this project and for reporting.

In observation of National Library Week, members were urged to donate books to local libraries – especially Nicolas Sparks’ books to the high school library.

Rebecca Reeves, Shelia Upchurch and Audrey Herring reported on the Salvation Army Empty Soup Bowl fundraiser. More than $20,000 was raised. Members were reminded to submit their recipes for the AFWC Cookbook. A brief report was given on the National Association of Letter Carriers Food Drive.

The program was presented by Shirley Sliger, who spoke on Gourd Crafts. She shared several pieces of art that she had made from gourds.

The meeting closed with the reading of the Collect.
