Young athletes will get a chance to shine at the second annual Jacklyn Nance Basketball Camp.

By Josh Prewitt for the FCT

Jacklyn Nance will be hosting her 2nd Annual Basketball Camp at the Russellville Parks and Recreation building June 8-10. Second through fifth grade will play from noon to 2 p.m. on those days. Sixth through twelfth grades will be from 3-5 p.m. The entry fee for the basketball camp for boys and girls will be $30.

“I started up the basketball camp because I’m very passionate about basketball,” Nance said. “I remember growing up and attending one of Luther Tiggs Basketball camps when I was little and how much of a impact it made on my life.”

Nance added, “The camp was established to give back to the community and to continue to teach players about basketball and what they can expect from it. The kids will develop a solid foundation in basketball on fundamentals to ball handing, shooting, techniques, post and guard moves, defense and passing.”

Nance and one of her fellow coaches, Siran Winston, with few others will be teaching the basketball camp. The camp’s main focus will be to help children with basketball and about life – from making good decisions on the court to making good life choices. The camp brings a positive message to all the young people participating.

“I’m a dedicated teacher of the game of basketball,” Nance said. “The camp emphasizes learning the game of basketball while having fun. The atmosphere is positive, and the instruction is excellent.”

Nance is a native of Russellville. She graduated from Russellville High School and played collegiate basketball at Wallace State Community College (2001 State Champions) and the University of North Alabama, 2001-2004, and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training.

She currently is a physical education teacher/head varsity basketball and track coach in Texas while also coaching and serving as general manager for the Houston Sparks Women Professional Developmental League (semi-pro) based out of Houston, Texas.

“As a coach (and former player) I see a lot of players that come through programs that I receive or watch play, and I notice that they do not have the proper fundamentals when it comes to basketball. In order to be good at basketball, it requires practicing the correct skills,” Nance said. “We want to develop players to be successful. I focus on basketball fundamentals and skill development. I want to create a life-changing experience that will help lead the way.

“This experience with activities with others will help young people grow and develop the confidence to be successful,” Nance said.

For more information call the Russellville Park and Recreation at 256-332-8770. Deadline to pre-register is June 3.
