Seuss Week coming to library

by Ally Willis for the FCT

Every year the Russellville Public Library celebrates Read Across America week, better known as “Seuss Week.”

This is one week of the year where the birthday of Dr. Seuss is celebrated is often a favorite of local children. In years past the library has hosted a one-day event. This year, however, the Russellville Public Library will hold a vacation-style preschool reading program.

Preschool age kids can come to the library for two hours starting at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, March 3 – 6.

“We wanted to get our preschool reading program started back up,” said Ashley Cummings of the Russellville Public Library. “Studies have shown that kids who start reading young usually test better in school. If you spark an interest of reading in a child they will more likely grow up keeping their interests in reading and in books.”

During the week, the kids will be involved in activities such as crafts, games, dress-up, and movies.

“To me, this week is both beneficial and fun for the kids,” said Cummings. “Reading helps the kids reach goals and become successful in those goals. The Library and events like Seuss week offer a place where kids can come and be themselves.”

If you have a preschool age child and are interested in participating in the weeklong program, contact Ashley Cummings at the Russellville Public Library at (256) 332-1535. Cummings said space is limited so earlier registration is suggested.
