Group to plant trees in PC

PHIL CAMPBELL – It certainly doesn’t go unnoticed that the landscape in Phil Campbell that was once covered with trees now stands barren even 10 months after April 27.
But thanks to the collaboration of two organizations, Phil Campbell residents can expect to see some greenery around their town this spring.
Sherry Davis, chairperson of the Citizens for Phil Campbell Long-term Planning Committee, said the Lions Club of North Alabama has agreed to come to the town on Saturday, March 3, to plant trees for many residents. The group will gather in front of Phil Campbell High School at 8 a.m. to distribute the trees.
“The Lions Club of North Alabama came to one of the very first meetings of the Long-term Planning Committee to see how they could help the town,” Davis said. “They have received a $10,000 grant that they will use to help us replant trees in the area.”
Davis said members of the Lions Club would be bringing maple and oak trees and would assist in the planting process as well.
“It’s been a long winter and a long time of looking at our town that was completely stripped of its trees,” Davis said. “This will be so good for our community and for our residents because it will brighten things up and remind everyone that we’re just going to keep moving forward.
“One of my biggest sayings is ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’ and Phil Campbell won’t be rebuilt in a day either. You just have to take it one step at a time and replanting these trees is just one more step in that direction.”
Davis said she already has several people signed up to receive trees but she’s looking for several more.
“This is a great opportunity so anyone who would be interested in receiving the trees is encouraged to call,” she said.
Davis added that anyone who doesn’t live in Phil Campbell but would like to volunteer to help plant the trees is encouraged to contact her as well by calling 256-810-3281 or e-mailing her at sherrydavis@franklin.k12.al.us.
