Vina rolls to 43-14 win

VINA — It took seven weeks and a few tough losses, but Vina has finally gotten into the win column after pounding Waterloo 43-14 as the Red Devils picked up their first victory of the season.

Vina (1-6, 1-4) got a 62-yard touchdown pass from Nick Schmittou to Clay Pierce and a 58-yard touchdown run by Andrew Hester to claim a 14-0 lead by the end of the first quarter.

Waterloo’s touchdown in the second quarter to cut the halftime score to 14-6, but Vina added 22 points in the third quarter to seize control of the game.

Ethan Pharr scored on a 15-yard run while Schmittou connected with Cody Renfrow for the 2-point conversion. Renfrow then hit Pierce for a 45-yard touchdown pass while Schmittou connected with Pierce for another 2-point conversion.

Renfrow added another touchdown — a 16-yard pass to Pierce — to give the Red Devils a comfortable 36-6 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

Pharr scored on a 5-yard run and Drake Hester added the point after kick.

Waterloo scored late in the quarter and added a 2-point conversion.

Andrew Hester was the leading rusher for the Red Devils, carrying the ball nine times for 142 yards. Pharr had 10 carries for 57 yards.
