Commission approves solid waste contract

The Franklin County Commission approved a contract with a company Monday that will handle disposing of the county’s solid waste.

The commission entered into a three-year agreement with Allied Waste/BFI for $27.51 per ton. That is about $1 per ton less than the previous contract the county had.

Franklin County Probate Judge Barry Moore said he was glad to see the county could save a little money with the new contract.

“With things as tight as they are everywhere, it is good anytime we can find a place to save a little money,” Moore said.

The contract is for the disposal of household garbage only. The garbage will be taken to a landfill in Lawrence County, whereas the past six years it has been taken to a site in Mississippi.

In other business, the council:

•approved a contract for the collection and auditing of the county’s sales tax

•approved the holiday schedule for 2012
