Local woman arrested for attempting to kill husband

PHIL CAMPBELL – After a three-week investigation, officers at the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department have determined a local woman was responsible for the shooting of her husband of 17 years.

Mandy Arleen Romero-Yocum, 35, 1559 Nix Road, Phil Campbell, was arrested Monday night and charged with attempted murder in the shooting of 38-year-old Randy Don Yocum.

According to Franklin County Sheriff Shannon Oliver, officers received a call on March 12 that there had been an accidental shooting at a residence on Nix Road in Phil Campbell.

When officers arrived on the scene, the found Randy Yocum had been shot through the front of his head but had not died as a result of the injury.

Oliver said when questioning Mandy Yocum at the residence, she claimed her husband was cleaning his gun when it went off and shot him through the head.

Randy Yocum was taken to Russellville Hospital where he was treated and then transferred to Huntsville Hospital.

According to Oliver, the victim was talking when officers were removing him from the scene, but slipped into a coma after being transferred to Huntsville.

“The case was still under investigation when we got a phone call about two days ago from the hospital,” Oliver said. “[Randy] Yocum had apparently come out of the coma and had told nurses that his wife was the one who had shot him.”

Oliver said after hearing this information, investigators picked Mandy Yocum up to be questioned again as to what actually happened the night her husband was shot.

“After we re-interviewed her, we felt there was enough evidence to charge her with attempted murder,” Oliver said.

Oliver added the investigation in this case is still ongoing.

Mandy Yocum was released from custody on Tuesday on a $22,500 bond.
