Vina, Red Bay move up in polls, RHS fifth
The Vina varsity boys baseball team and Red Bay varsity girls softball team have moved up in the latest Alabama Sports Writers Association polls while the Russellville varsity boys team remained at the same spot in the Class 5A poll.
Vina, now 13-3 overall and 4-2 in area play, is ranked fifth in the Class 1A poll. The Red Devils debuted at that spot two weeks ago, but a pair of losses to fourth-ranked Hackleburg dropped Vina to sixth last week.
Vina swept Belgreen earlier this week. The Red Devils will not play again until April 11 when they play Tharptown in a pair of area games that could decide which of those teams reach the playoffs.
Red Bay, ranked ninth, moved up for the first time this season. The Lady Tigers (7-4) debuted at No. 10 two weeks ago and remained there last week, but moved up following an area win against Phil Campbell.
Red Bay will play three games next week, hosting Lexington Monday before hitting the road for a pair of area games. The Lady Tigers will travel to Sulligent Tuesday and Lamar County Thursday.
Russellville made its only move up the poll last week when the Golden Tigers went from sixth in Class 5A to fifth. The Golden Tigers are on a 28-game winning streak and have picked up six wins since the previous poll.
Russellville will try to keep its winning streak going against area foe Muscle Shoals. The Golden Tigers travel to Muscle Shoals next Friday before returning home to play the Trojans next Saturday.
