Recycling efforts pushed at RB council meeting

Jill Perry with the Shoals Solid Waste Authority (SSWA) Recycling addressed the Red Bay City Council Monday evening to give the council additional information about the new recycling bin located in the city.

The 10-cubic-yard recycling bin has been placed by the Red Bay School to allow easy access for all Red Bay’s citizens.

The bin is divided into three compartments, and residents will need to have their recyclable items already divided into the appropriate groups when dropping the items off.

The bin in Red Bay accepts paper and cardboard products, including all paper products, corrugated and non-corrugated cardboard materials, shipping boxes, cereal boxes and paper towel rolls. However, delivery pizza boxes cannot be accepted.

Also accepted are plastics including water bottles, soda bottles, milk jugs, detergent bottles, and shampoo and conditioner bottles.

All these items must be rinsed clean and have the lids removed before they can be accepted.

Aluminum and steel products will be accepted at the Red Bay bin, which includes drink cans, food cans, foil, empty hair spray cans, wrought iron or aluminum lawn furniture, and any other types of metal. Drink and food cans should be rinsed clean.

Electronic and glass items are only accepted at the recycling center located at 721 U.S. 43 in Colbert County.

Perry reminded council members that the recycling bins provided by SSWA Recycling do not accept Styrofoam, household medical items and hazardous materials.

“Our goal is to try to keep these items out of the landfills and reuse the things we can,” Perry said.

“We owe it to our children and to their future to recycle these items.”
