State enjoys amazing success on the gridiron
The Auburn Tigers capped off a perfect season Monday night with a thrilling 22-19 victory over the Oregon Ducks in the Tostitos BCS National Championship Game.
The win came just a year after Alabama won its most recent national championship, giving the state back-to-back national championship winners for the first time in modern history.
To make the feat even more impressive, both schools had Heisman Trophy winners in their respective national championship year.
For a state with Alabama’s population, it is remarkable to have two state universities win the most coveted prize in college athletics two years in a row. California cannot boast of that. Nor can Ohio, talent-laden Florida or any other state. Texas A&M and TCU won back-to-back championships in the 1930s but that’s not really considered the modern era.
In a state where so much pride and passion is put into college athletics, Alabama should look proudly on the accomplishments of our state schools.
