Food drive drop-off points announced

Faith Mission Outreach in downtown Russellville will be sponsoring a canned food drive through Dec. 18.

Drop-off boxes can be found in Russellville at Save-a-lot, Foodland, Big Star, Calvary Baptist Church and the Franklin County Times; in Red Bay at the Piggly Wiggly; and in Phil Campbell at the Piggly Wiggly.

The Franklin County Times will also be offering a free 3-month subscription to anyone who brings 10 or more canned food items to the Times office.

According to Calvary Baptist Church pastor Dr. Wade Wallace, the purpose of the drive is to help support the high demand for food, especially during the holiday season.

“Since Faith Mission Outreach re-opened in October, we have been overwhelmed by the number of people in the community who have needed assistance,” Wallace said. “The item that people need the most is food, and this is a good time of year to get the community to help meet that need.”

Wallace said that Faith Mission Outreach serves about 100 families per week and most of these families have children.

“When someone gives a can of food, they are not just providing for a needy family to eat; they are helping that family meet other financial needs,” Wallace said. “By not having the expense of buying food, families can pay bills and purchase clothes or jackets for their children.”

Most of the drop-off locations are at grocery stores to make contributing more convenient.

“Hopefully people will just pick up a few extra cans while they are doing their own grocery shopping and drop those in the boxes before they leave,” Wallace said.

“If we all do something, it will add up to be a lot and it will really make a difference.”

Faith Mission Outreach is open for distribution on Thursdays from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. However, those wishing to donate food, clothing or furniture can stop by Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. and a volunteer should be available to take the contributions. Monetary donations can also be made to Faith Mission Outreach at P.O. Box 935, Russellville, AL 35653.

Anyone wishing to volunteer can contact Calvary Baptist Church at 256-332-2804.
