Students make up lunchroom committee at RES

RES’s Lunchroom Committee – comprised of two students from each class in the third, fourth and fifth grades – recently had their first meeting of the school year.

The students will be meeting once a month to discuss healthy eating habits and the importance of being physically active.

The committee was the idea of lunchroom manager JoAnn Pearson who discussed several activities the committee will participate in throughout the school year.

“The kids will be involved in learning how to eat healthy by watching movies, being involved in food taste testing,  learning where the food they eat comes from and how it grows in the garden,” Pearson said. 

Pearson also said the students will have visitors who will come to talk to them about different subjects such as healthy eating and what to do in a food-related emergency.

“We will have the local EMT coming to talk to the kids about what to do in case of an emergency in the lunchroom,” Pearson said. “We have several kids who have allergies and I want the kids to learn to stay calm if an emergency arrives and get proper help for their classmate.”

Russellville City Schools Child Nutrition Director Elaine Vaughn is glad the committee gets the students more involved.

“JoAnn really gets excited about doing extra things for the students” Vaughn said. “This is a great way to get feedback from the students and let them be a part of our program.”
