Local players receive honors
Three area football players earned statewide recognition for their performances last week.
Russellville’s Brent Calloway was a finalist for the Alabama Sports Writers Association Offensive Player of the Week.
He rushed for 210 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. His touchdown runs were for 55 and 64 yards.
Calloway was also recognized on the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Spotlight for Week 1. Joining Calloway on that list were Red Bay’s Chase Lindsey and Phil Campbell’s Corey Alexander.
Lindsey ran for two touchdowns in the Tigers’ 20-14 victory against Sheffield. His scoring runs of 1 and 50 yards helped secure coach Dale Jeffreys’ 100th career victory.
Alexander helped guide the Bobcats to a 27-6 win at Cold Springs. He rushed for 53 yards and passed for 149. He accounted for three touchdowns in the win.
