THS, BHS favorites in girls tourney

By Staff
This year there have been two teams in Class 1A, Area 15 that have stood out as the season progressed.
Tharptown, with a 5-1 area record, is hosting the tournament for the first time in school history.
Belgreen, which also has a 5-1 record in area play, is the defending area champion and is currently ranked third in Class 1A.
The teams split the season series with each squad taking a victory on its home court.
Tharptown stunned Belgreen 59-57 on Jan. 21, but Belgreen returned the favor with a 77-60 victory the following night.
Both teams are expected to win their first game of the area tournament and set up a rematch for the area title. Last season both squads met in the area tournament finals and Belgreen survived a double-overtime thriller with a 68-65 win.
Before the talk can begin about another Belgreen-Tharptown game, both teams must win Thursday night during the opening round of the area tournament.
Tharptown will begin the tournament against Vina at 6 p.m. Tharptown swept the season series with a 57-23 win and a 61-11 victory.
The Lady Red Devils have struggled for most of the season and have only managed to pick up two wins so far.
Belgreen begins the tournament at 7:30 p.m. against Phillips.
The Lady Bulldogs swept the season series with a 63-38 victory and a 55-43 victory.
Phillips has struggled for most of the season and has won only six games.
