Students at Russellville collected over 1,000 cans to help feed area families in need this holiday season.
Russellville Elementary School Assistant Principal Claudia Askew said the students, grades three through five, collected a total of 1,029 cans for the Faith Mission Outreach, which is now operated by Calvary Baptist Church.
Askew said the students had a little incentive to collect the canned goods.
Askew said the students will be treated to a movie and popcorn party once they return to school after the holiday break.
The top students in Mayfield’s class were also recognized for their efforts to collect canned goods.
Dr. Wade Wallace, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, said the mission is currently distributing food even though the mission isn’t open full time.
Wallace said the church has no timetable as to when the mission will reopen. The mission did receive a portion of the food collected by the Country Cottage in Russellville.
