Sheffield girls pull away, boys dominate to sweep Tharptown

THARPTOWN – Monday night was tough for the Tharptown varsity boys and girls basketball teams as they hosted Sheffield.
The Lady Wildcats dropped their third consecutive game with a 54-46 loss.
Tharptown fell behind 4-0 to start the game, but went on an 11-3 run to close out the opening quarter to take the lead.
Sheffield chipped away at the lead and a late 3-pointer in the second quarter gave the Lady Bulldogs a 20-19 lead at halftime.
The teams swapped the lead several times in the third quarter, and when it looked as though Sheffield would pull away, Kendra Baker sank a 3-pointer to tie the game 28-28.
From there the Lady Bulldogs did pull away thanks to a 9-3 run to close the quarter.
Chelsea McCluskey led the Lady Wildcats with 14 points while Baker added 13.
Also scoring for Tharptown were Chloe Lane (5), Kamri Sears (4), Breadon Sellers (3), Heather Hatton (2) and Joshlyn Rhea (2).
The Lady Wildcats opened the season with a 5-1 record, but the skid has dropped them to 5-4 overall.
Boys tumble
Sheffield took control early and never let up as the Bulldogs started the game on a 10-0 run and cruised to a 52-36 victory against Tharptown.
The Wildcat offense began clicking late in the first quarter, but still trailed 16-6 at the end of the opening period.
The visiting Bulldogs outscored Tharptown 14-5 in the second quarter to take a commanding lead.
Trailing by as many as 22 points, the Wildcats rallied a little, but it was too late to make much of a dent in the final score.
Wesley Borden led the Wildcats with 17 points and four rebounds. He was 3-of-6 from behind the 3-point line.
Devin Lawson scored seven points for Tharptown while Jacob Parker added three.
Also scoring for Tharptown were Matt Austin (2), Justin Britnell (2), Cody Cagle (2), Manny Ricardo (2) and Trevor Hallmark (1).
