Belgreen VFD teaches fire safety to students

BELGREEN – Fire Safety was the topic of choice when the Belgreen Volunteer Fire Department visited the school Monday morning.
Fire Chief Robin Grissom said four volunteer firefighters took time out of their schedule to help bring awareness to fire safety as part of Fire Safety Week.
"Last week was Fire Safety Week," Grissom said. "Everyday should be fire safety day. It's important for our students to be aware of fire hazards in the home and know what to do should they have a fire at home."
Grissom said this is the third year the department has presented a program for Fire Safety Week. The grades targeted by the program were pre-K through fourth grade.
Grissom said the students were instructed in several areas including how to dial 911, when to dial 911, the importance of smoke detectors and what to do should they have a fire at home.
The students watched a video featuring Sparky, the firedog, and toured the Fire Safety House.
"This is the first time we brought the Fire Safety House to the school," Grissom said. "We use it to teach the students about fire hazards and what to do during a fire."
Grissom said each student was given a grab bag filled with fire safety information and junior firemen's hat.
