PC mission needs help to continue work

PHIL CAMPBELL – With the times getting tougher by the minute and the county's unemployment rate skyrocketing, the New Freedom Mission in Phil Campbell is looking for help to keep the doors open.
Director Brian Scott said it takes about $700 to keep the mission open each month.
"We have one church that helps us with the finances, but it covers only about half of our expenses," Scott said.
The mission offers many different services to the community including free clothing and food, Angel Tree project at Christmas, and they serve Thanksgiving and Christmas Dinner.
"We give away everything that it donated," Scott said. "We don't sell anything."
Scott said the local grocery stores holds food drives occasionally, and all food donated is given away.
"I have a place where I can go buy food cheaper to give away, but we don't have the resources to buy the food since we are barely keeping the doors open," Scott said.
Scott said approximately 200 people come into the mission each month.
"There's a lot of people out there needing help," Scott said. "I'm just asking for churches or other organizations to help us continue to help the community. I know if the community knew we were in bad shape, they'd reach out, and help us."
Scott said if more financial support for the mission is not found, the mission will be forced to close.
"It's to the point where we have to get financial support or close the doors," Scott said.
