There was a day when R.C. Thomas Stadium was packed with visitors looking for a good place to sit and cheer on their Golden Tiger team down on the field below.
The Russellville High School football team moved out of the stadium in the late 1960s when the current Russellville Stadium was completed.
Thomas Stadium has been used by the local pee-wee association for years but has been in need of renovations for quite some time. This past weekend, volunteers gathered to give the old stadium a good cleaning.
CB&S Bank sponsored a work day last Saturday to make improvements there.
"This is where the children practice and play their football games," volunteer Jennifer Swinney said. "So, we decided to help give this field a new look."
A group from CB&S Bank met at the field last Saturday to clean and paint.
Some of the improvements at the field include new paint on the stadium and press box, new gravel to combat erosion, a new Russellville sign, and new benches for the players on the sidelines. The pressbox will also get a new roof this week.
"We are working with a lot of different businesses and community members to renovate this football field," Swinney said.
