A local soldier returning to the county for a visit was arrested and charged with attempted murder this weekend.
Dustin Andrew Miller, 20, 8850 Dorchester Road, North Charleston, S.C., was charged following a Sunday afternoon altercation in which he reportedly shot a man in the back.
Miller, a member of the U.S. Air Force, is accused of shooting 30-year-old Eric Hines, 3095 Franklin 77, Russellville, in the back with a pistol.
The shooting occurred outside Hines' house in the Mountain Star community.
Miller left the residence after the shooting and was found at a relative's house on Franklin 177 in Tharptown.
Hines was flown to Huntsville Hospital on Sunday and is in fair condition.
Sheriff Larry Plott said it appears that Miller was looking for an acquaintance of Hines' and that the two did not actually know one another.
Military officials have been made aware of the situation and are also conducting an investigation, Plott said.
Miller is a 2007 graduate of Russellville High School. Officials said he was back home for a relative's funeral when the incident occurred.
Investigators said Hines apparently began running away when Miller pulled the gun but was shot in the back.
Miller's car was confiscated along with weapons found inside the car at the residence on Franklin 177. Investigators said a handgun that is believed to be the weapon used, was found.
