Red Bay's Cox honored as First-Team utility player in Class 2A

RED BAY – The Red Bay varsity softball team had an outstanding season finishing third at the Northwest Region Tournament and one win shy of reaching the state tournament.
Part of that success was sophomore Emily Cox, who was one of the Lady Tigers' strongest hitters and a solid pitcher.
For her efforts, Cox was named to the Class 2A All-State team – the only player in Franklin County to earn such an honor. She is a First-Team utility player.
"The thing that impressed me about Emily was her hitting," said Red Bay coach Donnie Roberts. "She was a strong hitter."
Cox finished the season with a .464 batting average, .492 on base percentage and a .555 slugging percentage. During the 36 games she played in, Cox hit 41 singles and 10 doubles to drive in 36 runs for Red Bay while striking out only 10 times.
She also had a presence on the pitching mound, striking out 98 batters and allowing 104 hits in 119.33 innings pitched. She issued 24 walks and had a 1.23 earned run average while posting a 13-7 record as a pitcher.
She faced 554 batters and threw 1729 pitches this season.
"Emily is one of those kids with a hard work ethic," Roberts said.
Cox also excelled in the field, recording 11 putouts and 29 assists while committing only five errors to earn a .889 fielding percentage.
