RMS scholars win tri-county title

The Russellville Middle School Scholars Bowl team recently took home the top trophy at the Tri-County Scholars Bowl tournament held at Northwest Shoals Community College in Phil Campbell.
Scholars Bowl Sponsor Sharon Daily said the students competed against 15 schools from Franklin, Colbert and Lauderdale counties during the competition.
"We are in a league of 18 teams from the three counties, but only 15 schools participated in this particular competition," Daily said. "We competed against both public and private schools."
Daily said the scholars bowl team is comprised of her seventh and eighth grade enrichment students, and they study units. The scholars bowl questions are picked from those units of study.
Daily said private school River Hill came in second, and Muscle Shoals placed third in the competition.
"We spend a lot of time practicing," Daily said. "A lot times being fast is the key. It's not only about knowing the right answer."
Daily has been the enrichment teacher since 1978, but the scholar's bowl has only been in existence since 1991.
"We've won state championships three times in the 1990s, but this year we did not do as well as the state competition as we could have," Daily said. "We did not advance in the finals in the state competition."
During the recent Tri-County competition, two RMS students were named to the All-Tournament Team.
"Austin Martindale and Jennifer Hollimon were named to the all-tournament team," Daily said.
Daily said the scholar's bowl season is about over for the middle school division, but the high school students will be competing in the high school state competition on April 10.
