State should follow county's lead
By Staff
Charles Dill has withdrawn his name as a candidate for the Franklin County Commissioner, District 2.
Dill, who was running unopposed in the Republican primary, is a county employee. State election laws prohibit county employees to seek county offices unless they take a leave of absence to tend to their elected responsibilities.
Ironically enough, Dill was tripped up by a law state legislators have been trying to to dodge.
A practice commonly called double dipping has garnered statewide attention this legislative session as lawmakers tried to pass a bill that would protect the practice of simultaneously serving in the Alabama Legislature and holding taxpayer-funded jobs. This bill is unlikely to pass this legislative session but only because it's so late in the session, it's likely Gov. Bob Riley would be able to veto it without the threat of it being overturned. We ask that our Senator Roger Bedford and Representative Johnny Mack Morrow speak to their co-legislators and tell them the story of Mr. Dill and remind them of what's right and what's wrong.
