Belgreen softball splits with Red Bay

RED BAY – The Belgreen softball team earned a split at Red Bay Thursday afternoon.
In the opener Emily Watts hit a sacrifice bunt to score Katelin Barber and put Belgreen ahead 1-0 in the first inning. Red Bay tied the score in the second when winning pticher Emily Cox scored.
The Lady Tigers added two more runs in the fourth inning when Hannah Sharp hit a triple and scored on a throwing error and Taylor Hester also scored a run to make it 3-1 Red Bay.
Belgreen tied it againi when Barber and Deborah Billingham scored off RBIs from Watts and Martha Billingham.
Neither team scored in the sixth or seventh to cause the game to go into a tiebreaker in the eighth inning. Red Bay's Ashley Hardin scored on an RBI single from Kirstin Sharp to give the Lady Tigers a 4-3 victory.
Loren McVicker took the loss but didn't give up a walk while striking out two and scattering six hits. Belgreen had 12 hits but left 10 runners on base.
In the nightcap, the game stayed scoreless until the top of the fourth when Watts drew a walk, McVIcker hit a double to move her over to third and Martha Billingham hit a clutch RBI single to score Watts.
Martha Billingham, who also didn't give up a walk, was the winning pitcher for Belgreen (4-2) and allowed only three hits, while Whitney Sharp took the loss for Red Bay (4-5).
