VINA – The Vina offense clicked Friday night for five touchdowns, including three in the first quarter, to roll over Mt. Hope 35-6 on homecoming night.
The Red Devils (2-3, 1-3) scored on a 5-yard rushing touchdown from senior receiver Blake Thorn and a pair of rushing TDs (8 and 11 yards) by running back Bryan Darracott in the opening quarter to take a 21-0 lead.
Darracott, who finished the game with seven carrries for 161 yards, added an 89-yard scamper with 1:56 remaining until halftime to put Vina ahead 21-0.
With 7:43 left in the third quarter, senior Nash Creekmore found Randy Barnes for a 26-yard touchdown pass to put the Red Devils up 35-0. Barnes added the point-after attempt and finished 3-of-3 on PATs for the night.
Mt. Hope (0-5, 0-4) finally scored with 5:44 left in the fourth quarter when Spencer Arthur found Logan Pace for a 60-yard touchdown.
Vina piled up 229 yards of rushing and finished with 304 total yards of offense, while Mt. Hope had 219 total, including 135 rushing yards.
Creekmore, who was previously used in tandem with Darracott in the Red Devils' backfield as a running back, is now being used at quarterback since sophomore Brent Townsend sustained a season-ending rib injury in last week's loss to Phillips.
Thorn finished with three rushes for 39 yards and came up with an interception on defense, and Barnes added two catches for for 36 yards and a score.
Vina will be looking for its second straight region victory as the Red Devils travel next Friday to play Speake.
