Local teams fall short in exhibition games

VINA – The Vina Red Devils and Tharptown Wildcats are both hoping for better results from their Aug. 31 showdown after disappointing jamboree losses Thursday night.
The young Wildcats fell 20-8 to Marion County, and the Red Devils lost 20-0 to Hatton despite a strong defensive performance by the Vina rush defense, including several stops and tackles for a loss by senior linebacker Bryan Darracott and junior defensive lineman Matthew Hester.
"I thought the defense had a good game against the run, but I thought we'd move the ball better on offense," Vina coach Bill Smith said. "We need to block better, and there were just too many errors up front and too many dropped passes. Football is physical game, but a lot of it is mental, and we need to improve in that area. I thought our kids played hard, but we didn't play as well as we're capable of playing."
Lamar County 21, Phil Campbell 6
VERNON – Steven Lacey scored on an 18-yard run in the second quarter but it wasn't enough for the Phil Campbell Bobcats, who fell to 3A Lamar County in Thursday night's jamboree game.
Lacey finished with 30 yards on four carries, and Nathan Rickard added 20 yards on nine carries. Jonathan Dill was 3-of-5 for 34 yards, including two long completions to Pablo Santiago during the Bobcats' scoring drive.
