Board discusses possible new high school

The Franklin County school board may soon take steps to add another high school to the system.
Prior to Thursday evening's regular meeting, superintendent Bill Moss discussed the possible purchase of land with school board members to be used for the addition of a high school in Tharptown. Currently, the Tharptown Junior High School houses students from kindergarten through the ninth grade.
According to Moss, there are more than 900 students from the county who are attending Russellville city schools.
With the addition of a high school in Tharptown, many of those students would possibly stay in the county system, thus allowing the system to gain help with more tax revenue.
The board has looked at purchasing 40 acres of land across the road from the current school building to be used for ball fields and other facilities. The school, itself, would be built beside the current junior high school building which has recently undergone renovations, including the addition of a new cafeteria.
Board members decided not to place the item on the agenda for Thursday's meeting so that they could look further into the matter.
In action taken at the
meeting, board members accepted Moss' request to advertise for an assistant superintendent.
The board also accepted the resignations of Kelly Kiser as varsity boy's basketball coach at Phil Campbell and Vina boys head basketball coach Paul Humphres.
The next board meeting will be held on March 31.
