Heidelberg girls defeat Kemper Academy

LOUISVILLE Led by Courtney Thomas' 15 points and 17 rebounds, the Heidelberg Academy Lady Rebels dethroned two-time defending MPSA Class A Central State Tournament champion Kemper Academy 56-36 Saturday afternoon.
Winston Academy knocked off Christ Missionary and Industrial School 44-41 in the boys' championship Saturday night.
In the girls' title game, Heidelberg scored the game's first seven points and never trailed. The Lady Rebels led 8-5 after one period and carried a 22-13 lead into halftime behind seven points from Jennifer Barnett and five from Whitney Bass.
Heidelberg led 36-19 by the end of the third quarter in turning in clearly its best effort in the tournament.
Thomas finished with 15 points after scoring only three in the first half.
The teams combined for 51 fouls with Kemper called for 29.
Heidelberg, 23-6, took a 3-2 lead in the season's series with two wins coming in the postseason.
Heidelberg owned the boards, especially when the outcome was still in question. Poor shooting plagued the Lady Rams as well. Kemper made only 3-of-24 shots from 3-point range and was 13-of-23 at the free-throw line.
Heidelberg got 12 points each from Jennifer Barnett and Sarah Monk, seven from Bass, and six from Katie Barnett. The Lady Rebels made 25-of-45 free throws.
Kemper, 22-9, got 17 points from Leslie Beach and nine from Kayla Mosley.
Boys' Championship

The Patriots maintained their perfect record at home this year with the win.
Winston, 28-4, led 14-13 after one quarter and went up 28-20 in the second quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers from Brandon Jennings enabling the Patriots to take their biggest lead of the night.
CM&I, 24-6, closed to within 28-25 going into halftime.
Winston led 35-34 at the end of the third period following four lead changes in the quarter's last three minutes.
Taylor Paschal's putback with 2:31 remaining gave Winston the lead for good at 40-39. After taking 71 seconds off the clock, Winston went up 42-39 on a basket by Jon Duncan with 38 seconds left. The Crusaders were called for a foul away from the ball on the shot and Patrick Peterson canned two free throws to complete the four-point play.
Up 44-41, the Patriots missed two front ends of one-and-ones in the last 16.5 seconds, but the Crusaders were unable to score as well.
Winston got 14 points from Jennings, nine each from Peterson and Duncan, seven from Justin Eaves, and five from Paschal.
CM&I got 14 points from Cleo Robinson, 12 from Devin Williams, and 10 from Treallis Gregg.

The Rebels scored the game's first 10 points and outscored Wayne 13-8 in both of the first two quarters to take a 26-16 lead into halftime.
Heidelberg led 41-26 to start the fourth quarter.
The Rebels, 22-8, got 13 points from Chase Davis, 11 from Dusty Bass, 10 each from Will Thames and Ryan Yawn, and five from Paul Zeagler.
Wayne, 17-13, got 13 points from Patton Stanley, nine from Colby Beasley, and six each from Jacob Fontenot and Garet James.

Prentiss Christian scored the first eight points of the third quarter to turn a 16-13 halftime lead into a 24-13 advantage.
Prentiss Christian, 31-8, got 12 points from Kimberly Speights, nine each from Kayla Fortenberry and Lauren Griffith, and eight from Laura Green.
Rebul, 22-12, got 10 points from Caroline Blocker and seven from Courtney Roberts.
