Trojans fall to West Jones

By By Robby Atkinson

SOSO The West Jones passing game has been the main ingredient of success all season for the Mustangs and on this night that was a very true statement.
The Mustangs banged out 328 yards of total offense and held off a late surge by Northeast Lauderdale to take a 21-6 win at Mustang Stadium. The win for West Jones officially clinched the Division 5-4A title and a perfect
10-0 season.
key going into the playoffs next week."
West Jones took the kickoff and went on an impressive opening drive to take a quick 7-0 lead over the Trojans. The drive was set up thanks to the great passing of senior quarterback Brett Hyatt, who completed 4-of-5 passing on the drive for 56 yards. Justin Young ended the seven-play drive
with a five-yard touchdown run and put the Mustangs on top 7-0 with 9:09 left in the first.
After an exchange of possession the Mustangs went back to work on offense, but Northeast Lauderdale stood tall on defense and ended the drive on a turnover. Roger Lee came up with a fumble and the Trojans went to work on offense from the West Jones 42-yard line.
Despite the loss, the Northeast Lauderdale Trojans showed a lot of heart according to head coach Steve Nelson.
The drive quickly came to a screeching halt as the Mustangs came up with a turnover of their own. Josh Keyes came up with an interception for West Jones with 1:15 left in the first quarter to lead to the next score. The
touchdown came with 10:29 left in the second off a 36-yard passing strike from Hyatt to Fernando Goldman to extend the Mustang lead to 14-0 after a successful PAT by Britt Barefoot.
Northeast Lauderdale tried to mount some offense, but the drive once again stalled due to a great stand by the defensive front for West Jones. Adam Saul recorded a big sack on defense to force a Trojan punt and give the Mustang offense another opportunity. West Jones wasted no time in scoring on the next drive as Hyatt found another receiver for a passing touchdown.
Hyatt hooked up with J.J. Carter for a long 32-yard pass for a touchdown and give West Jones a comfortable 21-0 lead with 5:47 left in the second. The score remained 21-0 at the end of the second quarter and throughout the rest of the third quarter.
Northeast Lauderdale did manage a late touchdown with 8:33 in the fourth to cut the lead to 21-6. Dontray Walker scored on a four-yard rush to help the Trojans avoid the dreaded shutout. West Jones protected the football for
the remainder of the game and took the two-touchdown win.
Hyatt finished with 266 yards on 15-of-19 passing with two touchdowns. Northeast finished the game with 140 yards of total offense, but the player of the night for the Trojans was Lee. Lee had a pair of fumble recoveries
and a sack on defense.
West Jones and Northeast Lauderdale will enter the first round of the playoffs next Friday night.
