Trojans fall to West Jones

SOSO The West Jones passing game has been the main ingredient of success all season for the Mustangs and on this night that was a very true statement.
The Mustangs banged out 328 yards of total offense and held off a late surge by Northeast Lauderdale to take a 21-6 win at Mustang Stadium. The win for West Jones officially clinched the Division 5-4A title and a perfect

West Jones took the kickoff and went on an impressive opening drive to take a quick 7-0 lead over the Trojans. The drive was set up thanks to the great passing of senior quarterback Brett Hyatt, who completed 4-of-5 passing on the drive for 56 yards. Justin Young ended the seven-play drive
with a five-yard touchdown run and put the Mustangs on top 7-0 with 9:09 left in the first.
After an exchange of possession the Mustangs went back to work on offense, but Northeast Lauderdale stood tall on defense and ended the drive on a turnover. Roger Lee came up with a fumble and the Trojans went to work on offense from the West Jones 42-yard line.
Despite the loss, the Northeast Lauderdale Trojans showed a lot of heart according to head coach Steve Nelson.
The drive quickly came to a screeching halt as the Mustangs came up with a turnover of their own. Josh Keyes came up with an interception for West Jones with 1:15 left in the first quarter to lead to the next score. The
touchdown came with 10:29 left in the second off a 36-yard passing strike from Hyatt to Fernando Goldman to extend the Mustang lead to 14-0 after a successful PAT by Britt Barefoot.
Northeast Lauderdale tried to mount some offense, but the drive once again stalled due to a great stand by the defensive front for West Jones. Adam Saul recorded a big sack on defense to force a Trojan punt and give the Mustang offense another opportunity. West Jones wasted no time in scoring on the next drive as Hyatt found another receiver for a passing touchdown.
Hyatt hooked up with J.J. Carter for a long 32-yard pass for a touchdown and give West Jones a comfortable 21-0 lead with 5:47 left in the second. The score remained 21-0 at the end of the second quarter and throughout the rest of the third quarter.
Northeast Lauderdale did manage a late touchdown with 8:33 in the fourth to cut the lead to 21-6. Dontray Walker scored on a four-yard rush to help the Trojans avoid the dreaded shutout. West Jones protected the football for
the remainder of the game and took the two-touchdown win.
Hyatt finished with 266 yards on 15-of-19 passing with two touchdowns. Northeast finished the game with 140 yards of total offense, but the player of the night for the Trojans was Lee. Lee had a pair of fumble recoveries
and a sack on defense.
West Jones and Northeast Lauderdale will enter the first round of the playoffs next Friday night.
