Domino replaces Moore
Chuck Domino has been named the new head football coach at Itawamba AHS, replacing Lynn Moore, who left to become head coach at Ridgeland.
Domino, 33, has been the Indians' defensive coordinator the past three seasons.
"You always want to win a lot of ballgames, but the main thing for our team is that we are never going to get outworked," Domino said. "We may not win every game, but we are going to put our kids in the best possible situation to win games."
The Indians open the 2002 season on Aug. 30 at Water Valley.
Hoehn in at Hillcrest
Doug Hoehn has been selected head football coach at Hillcrest Christian. Hoehn has previously coached at high schools in Virginia (Loundon County and Potomac) and Tennessee (Jackson) and at East Tennessee State University and Lambuth University.
Hoehn replaces Dennis Thompson.
Hillcrest also has a new boys' basketball coach as Penn Majors, formerly of East Rankin Academy, replaces Kenny Bizot who left HC to take an assistant position at Mississippi College.
Majors led ERA to a 29-7 record in the 1999-2000 season.
Carter heads to Starkville
Former Brandon boys' basketball coach Greg Carter has taken a similar position at Starkville High School.
Replacing Carter, a native of Forest, at Brandon is former Ole Miss standout Joezon Darby.
Roy Pinkston has been named boys' basketball coach at Forest, replacing Steve Harber, who left the public school ranks to take over the boys' basketball program at Lamar School.
A native of Scott County, Pinkston has coached football, basketball, and track for the past seven years at Hawkins Middle School in Forest.
Robinson bound for Clinton
Bruce Robinson returns home to replace Joel Boone as boys' basketball coach at Clinton. Robinson coached at Madison Central last year and the Jaguars' 15-16 mark was quite an improvement over a 4-24 showing the previous season.
Robinson played at Clinton from 1981-84.
Boone, who coached at Clinton for 14 years after a previous stop at Canton, had a 516-301 career mark. He has retired and moved to Atlanta.
McHenry to lead Pearl
John McHenry has moved up to head baseball coach at Pearl, replacing Tim Dowdy, who accepted the head baseball job at Ridgeland. McHenry has been an assistant at Pearl for seven years.
St. Al slow-pitch dies
For the second straight year, a lack of interest has caused St. Aloysius in Vicksburg to cancel its slow-pitch softball schedule.
"I don't have enough kids who want to play," Lady Flashes' coach Gene Rogillio said. "It's about a 99 percent dropped sport. It doesn't mean it can't be revived, but it's done for this year."
Porter's Chapel Academy also dropped its slow-pitch program to focus on fast-pitch.
Always good for a chuckle
Vidalia (La.) Vikings head football coach Dee Faircloth is always good for a laugh with some of the one-liners he tosses out.
This year's beauty so far came following an hour of his team running 30-yard dashes for conditioning.
"I'm probably in better shape than most of them, and I'm close to death," Faircloth said.
Four players went down with cramps during the sprints.
"We go through 25 minutes of stretching before practice," Faircloth said. "But I see several of them goofing off. They're the only ones who can make them stretch. We can't do it."
Lots of new faces
Several area schools in the Brookhaven area will have new head football coaches this fall. That number includes Tucker Peavey at Brookhaven, Gareth Sartin at Bogue Chitto, Willie Brumfield at West Lincoln, Sidney Wheatley at Loyd Star, and Anthony Hart at Franklin County.
