JACKSON This year's teal hunting season gets under way Sept. 21 and extends through Sept. 29, according to the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. The daily bag limit is four, and the possession limit is eight.
Hunters can take to the marshes on Sept.1 for the early Canada goose season that extends through Sept. 15. The daily bag limit is five, and the possession limit is 10.
Woodcock season opens Dec. 18 and extends through Jan. 31. The daily bag limit is three, and the possession limit is six. Snipe season opens Nov. 14 and closes Feb. 28. The daily bag limit is eight, and the possession limit is 16.
Fall hunting for moorhens, gallinules, and rails opens Oct. 12 and extends through Dec. 20. The daily bag limit for moorhens, gallinules, and king and clapper rails is 15, and the possession limit is 30 singly or in aggregate. The daily bag limit for sora and Virginia rails is 25, and the possession limit is 25 singly or in aggregate.
Crow season opens Nov. 2 and extends through Feb. 28. There are no daily bag or possession limits. In addition, crows may be taken at any time that they are committing or about to commit depredation on crops or gardens.

There were two holes-in-one at Northwood Country Club recently.

Three qualify for U.S. Am
CHOCTAW Two Mississippians and a competitor from Florida qualified for the 102nd U.S. amateur Championship by posting the best scores in a two-day qualifier held on the Azaleas Course of Dancing Rabbitt Golf Club last week.
Clint Provost of Gulf Breeze, Fla., led the way with a 70-71 141, while Haymes Snedeker of Oxford shot a 68-74 142 and Micheal Hodges of Belden carded a 72-70 142.
The trio will play in the U.S. Amateur Aug. 19-25 at Oakland Hills Country Club in Bloomfield Hills, Mich. The winner of that event will be eligible for an exemption into the U.S. Open.

Rebel event set for Aug. 22
The Rebel Club will host a golf tournament on and fish fry on Aug. 22 with special guests including the Rebel baseball coaching staff. The golf tournament begins at noon at Northwood Country Club and is a four-person scramble format.
Lunch will be served at 11 a.m. A fish fry will be at 5 p.m. at Kimbrell Farm. Fees are $5 for lunch, $50 for golf, $10 for fish fry, a hole sponsor is $100 and Rebel Club dues are $20. Call Brad Feltenstein by Aug. 16, at 482-7823 or bfelt123@hotmail.com.

NCC junior champs crowned
Reid Kennedy, Nick Brown and Chad Bounds won their respective division in the recently held Northwood Country Club Junior Club Championship.
Kennedy won Division 1, while John Thomas Williamson was second and Derrick Smith was third.
Brown took the Division 2 crown, while John Everett was second and Jarrod Moulds finished third.
Chad Bounds was the Division 3 winner, with Will Fox coming in second and Scott Bounds third.

JSU Tigers battle heat
JACKSON As the Jackson State University Tigers' football team prepare for their season opener against Southern Miss on Aug. 31, the team is battling one of their nemesis right now – the scorching Mississippi heat.
Several players including offensive line coach, Carl Roberts have been plagued with heat exhaustion.
"In my 16 seasons with the team, I have never been sick from the heat," said Roberts. "It was hot this morning and it is even hotter this afternoon."
Fourth-year head coach Robert Hughes will be the first to tell you that he is bothered by the heat. But, his practice field… well that is another story.
"Practice must go on, regardless," said Hughes. "We will do what we must to prepare for the season. We play through the heat. We will even practice on both sides of the freeway, if we have to."
Besides being beaten up by the heat and being displaced from their original practice field, practice has been productive. The Tigers worked on position drills and spent time on kick-off returns.
The Tiger's annual media day, which was originally scheduled for today has been moved to Sunday at 2 p.m. at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. Media day is free and open to the public.
