New golf course map unveiled

After months of meeting and mulling, Mayor John Robert Smith on Tuesday unveiled a map he'll present to the city council for a proposed new municipal golf course at Bonita Lakes.
Smith said he worked with the local Friends of Bonita Organization and golf course architectural firm Ault, Clark &Associates to re-tool an initial proposal into one acceptable to user groups of the Bonita property.
Earlier this year, members of the Friends of Bonita Organization voiced concern over the design of the original course because they felt it took away areas of pristine park.
Collier Holmes, spokesman for Friends of Bonita, said today that his group is "fairly satisfied" with the new map.
Smith said the new design reflects a condensed course that has shifted north.
Smith said the interests of all user groups of the park  including horseback riders, hikers, walkers and joggers, boaters and bikers were considered in the new design.
He said members of the city-owned Lakeview Golf Course have also approved the new design.
