SALINA, Kan. It was said prior to their opening-round matchup in the NJCAA Women's National Basketball Championship Tuesday night that East Central Community College and Cloud County (Kan.) Community College had a lot in common. After they staged a battle that saw 16 lead changes and six ties, the difference in the two teams turned out to be one point. Cloud County's Laura Herman scored from close range with 5.6 seconds left to give the Thunderbirds a 74-73 victory. ECCC was unable to get a shot off as time ran out.
STARKVILLE Even with a valiant second-half effort put together by Mississippi State, James Madison defeated the Lady Bulldogs 63-61 in front of 2,224 fans at Humphrey Coliseum Tuesday night. After senior Meadow Overstreet connected on two free throws to tie the game with 14 seconds left, James Madison's Jess Cihowicz hit a running five-footer to put the Dukes up by a basket with 1.3 seconds remaining, and MSU's desperation heave at the end of the contest came up short.
ATLANTA, Ga. Ole Miss' Rod Barnes was named the 2001 Naismith National Men's Coach of the Year. Barnes was also named the SEC Coach of the Year by the league's coaches, Associated Press and CollegeInsider.com.

Southeast Lauderdale High had four golfers shoot 81 or less Thursday afternoon on the par-70 Lakeview Golf Course to win the Southeast Lauderdale Golf Tournament. The Tigers combined to shoot a 313 to claim the top spot. Just four shots off the pace was the Clarkdale High Bulldogs a 317. The West Lauderdale High Knights finished in third place with a 330.
The Lamar Lady Raiders didn't hit the ball Thursday afternoon. Kemper Academy's Jennifer Feasel did. Feasel went 4-for-4 at the plate to lead visiting Kemper (2-0) to a 10-3 win over the Lady Raiders (3-2) at the Sammie Davidson Complex. Feasel finished with a double, triple and three RBI on the day. The senior hurler was just as effective on the mound, going seven innings and giving up just three runs on seven hits to earn the win.

QUITMAN An emotional Scott Crenshaw called his Northeast Lauderdale Trojans' 17-15 Friday night Division 5-4A victory over Quitman the biggest win he's ever been a part of. "I've still got chill bumps now," said the first-year Trojans coach after his team blew a 10-0 second-inning lead, fell behind 12-10 in the fifth and rallied for seven runs in the final inning. "I've never seen more guts by 25 guys."

    Jay Butler
Southeast Lauderdale shortstop Jay Butler is hoping to play at the next level. A big factor will be how well his team performs in the next six weeks.
Southeast is currently 7-5 on the season after going 1-2 in the Quitman Tournament. The Tigers, though, are 4-1 in Division 5-3A play with the lone loss being a tough 6-5 decision to defending 3A champ West Lauderdale.
Butler says his bat is his strongsuit. "I'm hitting the ball pretty good, but my defense needs a little work," he said.
As for the Tigers' future, Butler says the team needs to step up its play.
