HATTIESBURG Rain got the best of the Jones County Junior College Invitational here Wednesday at the Pine Belt National Golf Course.
Only 25 junior college golfers out of a field of 65 were able to complete their rounds on the Pine Belt course located here near the Pine-Belt Regional Airport.
Most of the completed rounds came in the five-team Division III. It was decided to limit the division to the front nine scores only. The eight-team Division I portion of the tournament, where only 10 golfers completed their rounds, was canceled.
That was bad news for Itawamba's Scott Patterson who had the round of the day with a two-under-par 70. It was the best score turned in by six strokes. The next best belonged to Holmes' Blake Walker who had a 76.
None of Meridian Community College's five golfers completed their rounds.
Copiah Lincoln was declared the team champion in Division III. The Wolves shot a 161. Jonathan Halley led the way with a 37. Joey Young had a 42 and Chris Nations had a 41.
Northwest was two strokes back at 164. Dustin Howell had a 37 and when his card showed he did better on the final holes, he was awarded the medalist over Halley and Jones' Phillip Temple who also had a 37.
The Bobcats were third with a 168. Behind Temple's 37 was Adam Napier and Nolan Green with 43s. J. Bynum had a 45.
East Central was fourth with a 174. Kurt Comans shot a 42, just missing the All-Tournament team by a stroke. He was followed by Jeremy Stevens and David Burt who both had 43s. Zach Thames had a 44.
Burt, who actually completed his full round with an 87, pretty much summed up the day for the Warriors when asked about his round.
Southwest brought up the rear with a 192. Will Kimmel had a 38. Brian Hemphill shot a 50 while David and Chris Blackwell each shot a 52.
