Rain disrupts area prep games

As the sloppy weather moved into our area Friday afternoon, baseball games or any other outdoor events might have been canceled or postponed until a sunnier day. That was the case for most of the high school baseball and softball games.
Mother Nature made her presence felt at Northeast Lauderdale, as the Trojans were to tangle with the Quitman Panthers. The game will be made up Monday, March 4 at 5 p.m.
The West Lauderdale Knights were scheduled to host Newton County Friday night, but they have rescheduled for Thursday night at 7 p.m.
The Knights have also rescheduled their match-up against Choctaw Central. The game was supposed to be played on Tuesday, March 5, but it will be played Monday because the Lady Knights are still alive in the Class 3A girls basketball state tournament at "The Big House" in Jackson.
SE Lauderdale 5
Carthage 1
The Southeast Tigers picked up their fourth straight win of the season Friday night, by knocking off Carthage 5-1 in Division 5-3A action.
Phillip Butler went the distance on the mound for the Tigers as he picked up his second win of the season. Butler fanned eight batters, walked one, and allowed three hits.
J. Fortun Berry suffered the loss for Carthage.
Southeast picked up one run in the second inning and four in the sixth inning. Carthage's lone run came in the top of the fifth inning.
The Southeast Tigers were led in hitting by Butler as he went 1-for-3, Tyler Harper was 1-for-3 with two runs scored, and James Pierce went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored. Michael Anderson and Clay McRee also scored a run apiece.
The 4-2 Tigers will travel to Decatur on Tuesday to face-off against Newton County.
Lamar 12
Leake 1
The Lamar School Raiders braved the cold weather Friday night, thumping Leake Academy 12-1.
The Raiders picked up five runs in the second inning, one in the third, two in the fifth, and four in the sixth.
Leake scored its lone run in the top of the fifth inning.
The Raiders were led in hitting by Monroe Mayfield with four total hits, two of which were doubles, and he tallied four RBIs. Nick Lisi and David Haggard added two singles apiece.
Leake Academy was led by Justin Chancellor and Jeffery Chancellor with two doubles apiece.
Haggard picked up the win for the Raiders, to pace them to 1-1 on the year, while Justin Chancellor suffered the loss. Leake fell to 0-2.
The Raiders will be in action again on Thursday when they host East Rankin Academy.
Neshoba Central 5
Meridian 4
The Neshoba Central Rockets picked up their fourth win of the season, by knocking off Meridian Friday night.
Taylor Petty moved his record to 2-1 on the mound for the Rockets with the win.
The Rockets were led in hitting by Jacob Townsend with a single and a double. Pettey had two singles, while Michael Smith chipped in a double.
Meridian was led in hitting by Richmond Alexander with two hits.
The Wildcats will be in action again today when they play Quitman.
Fruitdale, Ala. 5
Choctaw Co., Ala. 4
Choctaw County fell to 2-1 on the season by dropping a hard-fought 5-4 decision.
R.J. Graham suffered the loss for Choctaw County.
Choctaw County was led in hitting by Dexter Leverett with a three-run homer, Larry Marzette went 3-for-3, while James Thompson went 2-for-3 on the night.
Choctaw County will travel to Holt High School today for a 3 p.m. game.
Choctaw Central 6
Noxapater 4
The rain nor the cold weather stopped the Choctaw Central Warriors and the Noxapater Tigers Friday night. The Warriors gave the Tigers their third straight loss in a 6-4 decision.
The Tigers sported a 4-0 lead going into the top of the third inning, but the Warriors struck in the bottom of the inning. Choctaw Central got two runs in the third, one in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth.
Tyler Williamson picked up the win for the Warriors, while Tommy Weeks suffered the loss.
The Tigers were led in hitting by Sed Eichelberger with a home run and a double. Weeks also had a double.
Noxapater will be in action again next Friday whe the Tigers travel to B.L. Moor.
Union 12
Forest 11
The Union Yellowjackets made a bout face to take a 12-11 victory over the Forest Bearcats at Union.
The Bearcats jumped out to a 9-0 lead. However, the Yellowjackets took an 11-9 lead before Forest rallied for an 11-11 tie in the top of the seventh.
Jody Blount left the park on the first pitch of the bottom of the seventh inning to take the 12-11 win.
Wes Henry was the winning pitcher for the Yellowjackets as he tossed the final two frames, striking out two.
Blount led the way for the Jackets with a home run and a single. Zack Robinson and Jordan Robinson both added two singles apiece.

Meridian 19
Choctaw Central 2
The Meridian Lady Wildcats traveled to Philadelphia Friday night and dominated the Choctaw Central Lady Warriors 19-2.
The Lady Wildcats got four runs in the second inning and five in the third, fourth and fifth innings.
Choctaw Central got its runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
Erin Murphy picked up the win to make the Lady Wildcats 2-2 on the year. Jenna Tubby suffered the loss.
The Lady Wildcats had 13 hits and two errors on the night, while Choctaw Central had two hits and five errors.
Multiple hitters for the Lady Cats were Artesian Boyd, Takymmea Clayton, and Raven Williams with two hits apiece.
Boyd, Laura Bowles, and Stephanie Nelson all had doubles. Boyd also tripled while Williams homered.
