Newton High Lady Tigers slip past Lady Rockets

The Lady Tigers of Newton High School held off a late rally by Neshoba Central to take a 61-59 win in prep basketball action in Philadelphia on Tuesday night.
The visitors from Newton led 16-13 after one quarter and 37-28 at the half, before the Lady Rockets began their comeback. Neshoba outscored Newton 19-13 in the final quarter, but it wasn't enough as NCHS fell to 4-1 on the season.
Lenore Gray scored 17 points to lead Newton, while Creoshia Williams hit for 11.
India Backstrum led Neshoba Central with 23, while Elyse Willis had 12 and Krystal Wells scored 10.
Nanih Waiya Girls 56
Ackerman 42
Nanih Waiya girls beat Ackerman Tuesday night by a score of 56-42. Leading scorers for Nanih Waiya were Heather Steele with 13 points, Alana Hickman with 12, and Courtney Graham with 12.
Nanih Waiya outscored Ackerman 22-13 in the third quarter.
Enterprise Girls 49
Mize 29
Enterprise girls trounced Mize Tuesday night by a whopping 49-29. Leading scorer for Enterprise was Shanda Bester with 17 points while Mize's Santana Agee had 11.
Philadelphia Boys 70
Union 14
Philadelphia High School jumped out to a 39-6 halftime lead and then rolled to a 70-17 win over Union on Tuesday night.
Diego Gill scored 14 to lead the Tornadoes, while Mandrako Jackson hit for 10. Union was led by Bryan Huddleston with eight.
Neshoba Central Boys 108
Newton High 33
Tawon Walker scored 25 and Desmond Jones scored 20 to power the Rockets of Neshoba Central to a 108-33 victory over visiting Newton High School.
NCHS outscored Newton 40-10 in the third quarter and 31-7 in the fourth to stretch out the final score.
Calvin Parker hit for 15 for the Rockets, while Anthony Jones and Tavares Walker had 11 each.
East Rankin Boys 58
Newton Academy 42
Newton County Academy played East Rankin Academy even over the last two quarters, but the first two quarters were not good ones for the Generals.
ERA led 12-5 after the first quarter and then outscored the visitors 12-3 in the second quarter to go up 24-8. That would prove to be the final margin. Wil Bean scored 23 to lead NCA.
Leake Boys 83
Central 50
Leake outscored Central 28-6 in the second quarter to stretch its 11-point first-quarter lead to a 52-19 lead on the way to the handy win. Drew Wolverton hit for 17 to lead Leake, while Daniel Jones scored 16.
Presbyterian Christian Boys 57
Sylva-Bay 32
The homestanding Saints dropped a 25-point decision to the team from Hattiesburg.
Nathan Hayes led SBA, now 0-1, with 14 points in the game.
East Rankin Girls 60
Newton Academy 40
East Rankin took a 36-21 halftime lead and then went on to take the 20-point victory over the visiting Lady Generals.
Casey McMahon scored 25 points for NCA, while Andi Chesney had 12.
Enterprise Boys 63
Mize 57
The homestanding Bulldogs used a big second quarter to overcome a four-point first-quarter deficit. EHS then held on in the second half to take the six-point win.
Mize led 14-10 after one, but EHS went up 30-23 at the half.
Cory Boggan led Enterprise with 32 points, while Mitchell Burns scored 22. Lee Sullivan had 13 for Mize.
Leake Girls 87
Central 43
The Rebelettes ran their record to 4-0 on the season with the big win over the Lady Vikings. Leake scored 24 in each of the first two quarters and 25 in the third on the way to the 44-point win.
Laurin Gross hit for 18 to lead five players in double figures for Leake. Kristen Caldwell scored 13, Elizabeth Sanford 12, Laurin Powers 11 and B.J. Helton 10 for the winners.
Presbyterian Christian Girls 49
Sylva-Bay 31
Presbyterian built a 37-13 halftime lead and rolled to the 18-point win over host Sylva-Bay on Tuesday night. Amber Carlisle scored 21 for SBA while Meredith Campbell hit for 12 to lead the winners.
