Excellence in education

DECATUR Tiffany Chancellor of Meridian is a member of the East Central Community College Warrior Corps, a select group of students who assist in recruiting and serve as hosts for various campus events.
Chancellor, a sophomore liberal arts major, is a member of the Baptist Student Union and Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.
Chancellor is a graduate of Enterprise High School, where she served as Beta Club president, senior class vice president and editor of the yearbook. She was also selected Prom Queen and Miss EHS.
She is the daughter of Kitrell and Tanja Chancellor of Meridian.
JACKSON Dell Smith of Meridian has been selected as a member of the Millsaps Chamber Singers.
The Millsaps Chamber Singers was formed in 1993. It is a touring choir that mainly performs choral presentations at United Methodist congregations, nationally and internationally. The membership is drawn the Millsaps Singers.
Smith, a junior majoring in music and biology, is a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity, Mu Phi Epsilon, Beta Beta Beta and Alpha Epsilon Delta honoraries.
He also participates in the Millsaps Drum Corps and Major productions.
Smith is the son of John and Vicki Smith of Meridian. He plans to pursue his master's and doctorate degrees after graduation.
Corey Fontan, 17, of Enterprise, and Clinton Brown, 18, of Bailey, have received the Dr. George W. and Ettamac Bounds Jr. Scholarships for the new school year at Meridian Community College.
The MCC Foundation funds the $700 scholarships through an endowment the late Dr. Lemann Bounds and his wife, Wilma, established in memory of his parents.
Fontan is interested in Christian studies and electronics. He is a graduate of Meridian High School, where he served as president of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes for two years and was a member of the Close-Up Club and the National Honor Society. He is a recipient of the MHS Service Award.
Brown is studying in the college's University Transfer Program. He is a graduate of West Lauderdale High School, where he received National Honor Society and National Who's Who recognition.
DECATUR Tam Cooper of Jackson was recently selected to serve as an out-of-state representative on the East Central Community College Alumni Association Board of Directors.
Cooper, a 1992 ECCC honor graduate and former Decatur resident, is employed as dispositions specialist for the Molpus Woodlands Group in Jackson.
She previously served as director of scholarship programs for the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society.
DECATUR Artwork by East Central Community College alumni, Jennifer Thames and Dianne Douglas, both of Newton, will be displayed at the college as part of homecoming activities the week of Oct. 15.
A reception to showcase the art will be Oct. 18 in the lobby of the Vickers Fine Arts Center.
Thames, a 1987 graduate of ECCC, teaches art at Newton High School. She will present watercolors and pastels from her collection.
Douglas, a 1995 graduate of ECCC, teaches art and history at Morton High School. She will feature her work in watercolors and acrylics.
Elizabeth Harmon, a West Lauderdale High School senior, has been named a "commended student" in the 2002 National Merit Scholarship Program.
About 34,000 commended students are being recognized throughout the United States for their exceptional academic promise.
Although commended students will not continue in the 2002 competition for Merit Scholarship awards, they were among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the 2002 competition by taking the 2000 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
TUSCALOOSA Natasha Jeanine McLeod of Meridian was a President's List scholar at the University of Alabama for the 2001 summer term.
President's List scholars at the university must have a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
