Woman accused of killing husband waives bond hearing

RUSSELLVILLE — The woman accused of fatally shooting her husband because she felt “threatened” by him will remain behind bars after she waived her right to an Aniah’s Law hearing.

On Monday, 65-year-old Sheri Mitchell-Clutts waived her right to a bond hearing, meaning she will remain in the Franklin County Jail.

Mitchell-Clutts is accused of killing her husband, 69-year-old Timothy Clutts, by shooting him in the chest with a .40 caliber handgun, according to court records.

On May 11, deputies with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office were called to a residence on Duncan Creek Road in reference to a woman claiming she had shot her husband.

After discovering Timothy Clutts’ body, deputies interrogated Sherri Mitchell-Clutts and she admitted to killing him.

Sgt. Kyle Palmer told the TimesDaily Mitchell-Clutts perceived her husband “as a threat” and believed he was going to kill her.

Clutts body was transported to the Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville for an autopsy, Palmer said.

The handgun believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered by deputies inside the residence.

Palmer said the sheriff’s office had not had much contact with the couple.

“They reported a dog had been stolen from them, and there have been a few [emergency medical services] calls to the home and that’s it,” Palmer said. “We also found out that she had open-heart surgery two weeks ago, and he was a cancer survivor.”

Mitchell-Clutts said her husband was checking up on her prior to the shooting, which she told investigators she believed was a threat.

Mitchell-Clutts is charged with murder.
