Vina softball aims for breakthrough
The softball program at Vina High School is focused on reaching new milestones as the team works toward its postseason goals.
Head coach Randy Barnes said the team begins each season by setting clear expectations, and the program’s biggest objective remains advancing out of its area and reaching the regional tournament in Florence.
Another priority for the team is competing for a county tournament title.
Barnes said both goals present a challenge, especially in a competitive area that includes strong programs such as Hackleburg High School and Phillips High School. Still, the Red Devils are embracing the challenge as they continue building the program.
Vina is led by a group of experienced upperclassmen who help guide a roster that includes several younger players. Seniors Braxtyn Quinn and Harleigh Ridge provide leadership alongside juniors Lana Bell and Kenzie Elrod.
Barnes said those four players play an important role in setting the tone for the team.
“When those four are playing well and hitting well and playing good defensively, the rest of the team responds to that,” Barnes said.
Much of the early part of the season has been spent experimenting with different positions as the coaching staff works to determine the best lineup combinations. With several young players getting playing time, Barnes said the goal has been to prepare the team for longterm success while continuing to compete.
Pitching has been anchored by Bell, who also plays shortstop when she is not in the circle. Barnes described Bell as a well-rounded player with a strong understanding of the game who contributes both on the mound and at the plate.
Freshman pitcher Mikayla Shotts has also taken on a significant role early in her career. Barnes said the young pitcher has already shown promise and continues to gain confidence with each outing.
At the plate, Vina relies heavily on its experienced players at the top of the lineup. Quinn has been one of the team’s most consistent hitters, known for making solid contact and putting the ball in play.
Elrod adds speed near the top of the lineup and creates pressure on opposing defenses once she reaches base. Ridge has also emerged as a key offensive contributor, delivering timely hits and helping drive runs for the Red Devils.
Bell rounds out the top portion of the lineup, using her speed and contact hitting ability to keep the offense moving.
While the lower part of the lineup is still developing, Barnes said the younger players continue to improve with experience and are gaining confidence with each opportunity.
Barnes said he is encouraged by the team’s growth and believes the combination of veteran leadership and developing talent gives the Red Devils a strong foundation moving forward.
“We’re young, but they’re learning and getting better every day,” Barnes said.
